Honestly, I don't think he'll get anything done that will really impact people's lives. I may be uninformed, but Biden is the least leftist candidate that I've seen in a long time.
One president is not going to make the difference that the USA needs, but I am convinced that Bernie can set a trend in motion. Be a catalyst, as you said. If him being elected can make left and right wingers realize that social democracy is plausible, and if this causes politicians to move even slightly to the left, then he'll have done a good job.

Bland Bush 1 led to charismatic Clinton, naughty Clinton led to Bush 2, Bush 2's Iraq war led to Obama, Obama's message of change and racial policy led to Trump, etc.

if we got Bernie it would cause a massive reaction in the states and senate/congress would be lost to a red wave, just like what happened to Obama. a bland centrist just a hair left of center will cause less of a reaction.
