I'm not saying it's all Trump's fault, just that he has had an effect, and I think a relatively significant one. I can't imagine Colbert or Bee making those comments and getting away with it under a Bush or Clinton presidency.
it get's gray fast. Trump's history means that when he enters office all of a sudden things that weren't in play are now in play. That's related to, but separate from, things Trump openly emboldens based on his actions as POTUS or as a candidate.
"Trump's effect" shouldn't lump together 20 year old Stern interviews, tweets at Rosie O'donel, and what his actual regime is doing. And yet they're used interchangeably on news networks all day. The same way that the right is using his business successes as a way to pump up his credibility now.
ANYTHING that Trump did in the past is a package deal voters voted for, and therefore the blame for lowered discourse on those specific factors are their fault, not Trump's. He didn't even try to hide his flaws, he fucking called out Carly Fiorina for being ugly and she was like #6 in the polls. It's all baked into the cake, sure someone is to blame but not Trump specifically. Unless he continues those actions in the office itself.
edit: unrelated
saw on reddit someone in one thread first saying that Ivanka's business handlings don't matter, because she's only in office in an advisory role. Then claim Samantha Bee needs to be prosecuted for attacking a government official. slow down there sparky
