Por que?
She spent over two years negotiating a deal with the EU that isn’t popular among parliament or the electorate. Parliament could have been consulted prior to negotiations to ensure there was a consensus on key issues. Instead, it’s been May’s way or the highway and now with her deal dead in the water after 2 huge parliamentary defeats we’ve only got a short extension to article 50 to figure out what to do next.
As for why this is happening today specifically, it’s because she is considering agreeing a compromise suggested by Labour MP’s where they would vote for her deal on the condition that its brought to a national vote with the option to remain in the EU. The vast majority of Conservatives are totally opposed to the notion of a 2nd referendum in any context, even if it’s the only way May’s deal could work.
I initially had sympathy for May trying to do the near impossible job after the Brexiteers cut and ran, but her stubbornness in persisting with her deal, and willingness to run down the clock to blackmail MPs to vote for it, has been to the detriment of the national interest.
