Is it really a surprise that the urban party controls the states with the highest income and the rural party the states with the lowest? I can come up with a dozen confounding factors that could plausibly explain this finding without relying on a causal relationship (that is, something along the lines of "these states are poor/rich because they are republican/democrat").
