The thing is that he doesn't even remember that his mind has changed. His ego is so large and fragile that he insists that it was always the case, in the face of absolute hard evidence in recordings, and he just rolls over it and his low-information base doesn't give a fuck, somehow.

ETA: Actually, it's not much of a mystery - it's that they seem to do the same thing, and so they're perfectly happy to cover up for someone else doing it.

It's really a fairly uniquely American problem, near as I can tell - a large rash of people who think they're entitled to their own facts and that protecting their ego from ever admitting when they're wrong is significantly more important than the truth.
