So Jen Psaki says that Biden's prior position on the filibuster(apparently in a NYT interview during the campaign, he opposed ending it) has not changed.
Triple post because this administration is too normal.
That's not really indicative of Biden's true intentions regarding the filibuster. Let's assume for a moment that he indeed wants to get rid of it. In this case, would he just be blunt about it and go "we got the votes, I dont care about precedent or norms, we're in power, screw it, we'll go for the nuclear option right away"? No, of course not.
Instead, he would start out by insisting that he does not want to end the filibuster. Then, he would wait until there is a popular bill spiked with Democratic poison pills that Republicans cannot possibly let pass. Say a covid relief bill which contains provisions for DC and PR statehood or some other kinds of voting rights reform. Then, he can shed some crocodile tears and argue that he really really does not
want to end the filibuster, but that the evil obstructionist Republicans leave him no other choice.
Hence, whether Biden genuinely wants to keep the filibuster or actually wants to end it, he would publicly claim to be against nuking it either way. Therefore, his words on the issue dont carry much weight at the current stage. We wont know where he truly stands on it until there has been a good opportunity to make the aforementioned move.
