When I was in school black Pete and st. Nick visited every dec 6. It never occurred to me that the colour of black Pete was anything other than soot. I don’t know when the school stoped doing black face Pete in our community but it still seems silly to be that it’s not allowed.
Soot is how it was explained later on, it's quite a good mitigation for the kids.. Kids really don't care about it, none of them, it's when you grow up and see the links towards slavery and ofc that we should all be afraid of black pete, or he'll put you in a sack and kidnap you to Spain.
It's not really a biggie to change the tradition towards actual soot petes, (/e: cutting off the stereotyping links) looking more like they've gone through a chimney. Not being completely black, but with soot stripes on their faces.. The tradition still continues and the kids still don't care
