Well for starters, should he receive the death penalty, it gives him grounds to appeal against the ruling so Trump's tweet could endanger the judicial process. In an extreme case it could even result in the guy walking free.
As president he is not entitled to offer personal opinions on these matters. His opinions can prejudice the courts which is dangerous for the legal process.

Trump saying the guy should get the death penalty does not sway the courts, or anyone's, original opinion if he should or should not get the death penalty. Saying the opposite is simply a far reach looking for another reason to criticize.

The death penalty is evil. He should have his arms and legs surgically removed and then be placed on a street corner to beg.
