AH. The expression has probably changed a bit. Back in the day...even considering the second pic is old... a "good" something, just meant, really serious about being that something.
In other words. the phrases "a good communist" and "a serious communist" are pretty much synonymous.

That phrase never meant good as in the opposite of evil.
