Of course it matters, but far less than policy that will actually impact our lives.
If Steele would rather have a stacked liberal Supreme Court for his lifetime, good for him. But it's ridiculous for him to call himself a conservative. He clearly values those ideals far less than maintaining the illusion that politics is some sort of gentleman's profession.
Winning elections matters. Steele couldn't do it. Romney couldn't do it. McCain couldn't do it. Jeb certainly wasn't going to do it.
The Republican party needed to change. Is Trump the standard bearer we need? Hardly, but better than being the loyal opposition as Democratic priorities are pushed through Congress and the Courts for the next 20 years.
No, it doesn't matter. If Trump's behavior in office doesn't rise to the level of social conservatives/evangelicals/religious voters supporting another candidate running against him in the primary, then character doesn't matter anymore.
It's beside the point, but people need to be consistent on this. Was Hillary a horrible, incompetent, dislikeable candidate or not? If she was, you can't then argue that the orange buffoon was the only one who could've beat her. That's silly.
