as always i ask the cui bono question and i cant think of a single thing that iran would gain from an attack on 2 random ships
Well, Iran DID threaten to do just that about a month and a half ago. Something like... we will make shipping impossible.

Why would a lesser foe provoke the war machine when they know they would get steam rolled?
I’ve come to learn the party who most benefits after everything settles is the guilty one. I can think of a few regional players that would be ecstatic if Iran got stomped out. Saudi Arabia? Israel?
Look what happened during the Iraq war. There may truly have been WMD, that had their development stopped and had their use prevented, because the US bombed Iraq back to the stone age. We still don't really know about the WMD....we just know what Wolf Blitzer on CNN told us.
Let's for a second assume there WAS... a WMD threat in Iraq. How could the US prove there was? Ask their deep cover spy guys to come out in the open and show proof?
I mean it would have been nice to see pics of a factory that had a sign that said We make the best WMD in Iraq... shop here. But chances are, that wasn't gonna happen.
Depending on the TYPE of WMD....they might have only needed a small bathroom to make it. Biologicals come to mind. So by the time we had men and reporters on the ground...there might not have BEEN any traces left. That doesn't mean there wasn't WMD.
