They also wrote down that they shouldn't be allowed to do some things, and this was enforced to a degree, which arguably made it preferable to more totalitarian governments.

I dont like paying taxes like most people but at the moment, I have to and need too so we can have a functioning society. I totally understand it as well from the war perspective, I do not support it and wish I had more control over where my money goes.
This is pretty consistent with a minarchist libertarian position btw.
Keep some basic services like roads etc but minimize government and taxation beyond that and be skeptical of wars and try to stay out of them if they are not defensive wars.
I think it should be more voluntary and people especially shouldn't be forced to fund things that they find abhorrent.
