This. Also note that the bill is coming from Republicans too, so this whole dispute is within the ranks of the state GOP between a mainstream faction which wants to move the age limit up, and a smaller faction of hardcore religious folks who disagree. This disagreement is then blown out of proportion by the media to frame the GOP-at-large as supportive of child marriage when the bulk of the party is actually trying to do the opposite.

Democrats wanted to keep slavery legal.

Fine, we're still talking about the hard-right faction of the state GOP in the most conservative state in the country while the media frames this story as if legalizing child marriage was the majority position of the national GOP. Also note that the majority of the GOP in the most conservative state in the country is trying to raise the age limit and crack down on child marriages. It's quite sad and telling that they get pretty much zero credit for that.



Not so much predators, just religious hicks stuck in the 50s when it was quite common and normal for people to get married at 14, 15, 16, all while having children out of wedlock was considered a total no-go.

In here, people under 18 are considered minors and cannot marry. People over 18 are considered adults and can marry whoever they want. It's that simple.
