What are the optics? Its going to rub on Biden's legacy and perception of his statemanship, not US reputation in general. And I don't see how Biden could be seen weaker than he already is, so no loss there.
If Biden was going to be the guy to stand up to Putin and refuse to let him bully the west, he would have done it a year ago when Russia massed troops on Ukraine's border
A famous gay female athlete being imprisoned in a penal colony in Russia is more damaging optically than Paul Whelan or whoever else is out there whose names I don't know.
What do you think the media reaction to this exchange is? You have sports media praising Biden, and you have mainstream political media covering it factually(which looks good for Biden) and serving up pundits who praise the move. Your perspective that it wasn't a good enough deal might be true on the merits(though I disagree), but it doesn't matter. Almost nobody nitpicks a prisoner exchange where there's a 1 to 1 trade, a Russian nobody ever heard of 6 months ago for the most famous WNBA athlete. This isn't the Bowe Bergdahl deal.
From a geopolitical perspective, I think it looks good(and maybe is good) for both sides that our nations can get something done while the Ukraine conflict persists.
