to be quite frank i think this was a good deal. the biden admin can show they applied the logic of "leave no man(or woman) behind" and "we protect our own, regardless of what crime was committed abroad". in this regard this exchange conforms to american values.

are there more americans held abroad? yes. is the deal perfect? no. but i would not go so far as to say what a load of you are saying here. ultimately they got her home and she's safe. if you were in her shoes you would be (should be) forever grateful to your country (even if your countries actions caused your incarceration in the first place).

I wonder if they'll have a ceremony when she gets off the airplane, with the national anthem playing, so she can get a chance to kneel again

i think the argument will be the charges where "trumped up" no pun intended, and therefore she will be allowed to go home. unless someone has a development on this ? while you can frown at her poltical...statements, its clear she was railroaded in russia.

What are the optics? Its going to rub on Biden's legacy and perception of his statemanship, not US reputation in general. And I don't see how Biden could be seen weaker than he already is, so no loss there.
If Biden was going to be the guy to stand up to Putin and refuse to let him bully the west, he would have done it a year ago when Russia massed troops on Ukraine's border

A famous gay female athlete being imprisoned in a penal colony in Russia is more damaging optically than Paul Whelan or whoever else is out there whose names I don't know.

What do you think the media reaction to this exchange is? You have sports media praising Biden, and you have mainstream political media covering it factually(which looks good for Biden) and serving up pundits who praise the move. Your perspective that it wasn't a good enough deal might be true on the merits(though I disagree), but it doesn't matter. Almost nobody nitpicks a prisoner exchange where there's a 1 to 1 trade, a Russian nobody ever heard of 6 months ago for the most famous WNBA athlete. This isn't the Bowe Bergdahl deal.

From a geopolitical perspective, I think it looks good(and maybe is good) for both sides that our nations can get something done while the Ukraine conflict persists.

When a mobster gets pinched do those guns just disappear into the ether?

Do you think the current gangs still using his weapons and his connections care where he is?

Let's do some simple math.

Mobster acquires 1000 weapons(conservative number there) and front/sells them all around Chicago over the course of 10-15 years.

950 guns are still on the street

10 were broken in shipping

40 were ditched at the crime scene

You can't unring that bell, though. Those guns are already out there, and the 14 years Bout has spent in prison didn't change that.

to reiterate and be clear, neither of them will be going to prison in their home countries. Russia doesn't acknowledge our arrest of Bout as legitimate and we don't recognize their arrest of Griner as legitimate, neither side is going to honor the other side's prosecutions

yea fair enough. god knows both governments have terrible records re: imprisoning people (we dont need to dwell on this).

I just think a lot of people posting in this thread are NAIVE as fuck and probably live in a nice cozy suburb.

A black lesbian WNBA player who knowingly brought cannabis extract on a plane to a country that forbids it is traded for a king-pin arms dealer.

Welcome to 2022 where the most illogical decision is the right decision. yay democrackheads

What difference does being black or lesbian make? ^^

Media reaction so far has been pretty negative, be it MSM or social or whatever. If liberal fawning websites can bubble over with criticisms on this kind of announcement, its not like its great optics. And who mediated the deal? MBS. Optics issues galore. Even if its not Bergdahl, its hard for anyone to argue that an arms dealer for WNBA player is a fair exchange, much less when those other americans have at least some visibility and were talked about in news leading up to this. And importantly, it shows that Biden tried to hold out against Putin and instead caved and gave him exactly what he wanted. My perspective is that any deal is better than no deal and we really aren't losing anything on optics when its just making Biden look worse when he's already deep underwater. Its still a net positive, even if its the least possible.
