It's not whether things "need" or "don't need" to change. Change is inevitable after it crosses a proverbial event horizon. Just as the people who were pro-slavery were left in the dust, the people who thought women shouldn't vote, anti-gay people, etc.
The writing is on the wall where society will be heading. Resist as you may.
Trends fall off, I don't view this as something society is moving too, but closer to a trend to get attention at this point. Again there's just not the population of xyz group and the more extreme it gets the more you turn off those moderate individuals who supported it beforehand. The buzz will inevitably end over the years I assume and it will go back to status quo where no one has ever heard of or cares about these unusual fringe groups of people.
There's always been oddballs that associate differently and they just align with whatever oddball trend is at the time. This one will pass and a new one will arise. I still get a kick thinking back at those goth kids in school. Now my cousins don't even know what a goth kid is, the subculture is dead.
