Obligatory 'play stupid games - win stupid prizes' however with that being said, I still have sympathy for her & her family. Spending any amount of time in a Russian prison doing hard-labor would be a literal nightmare. much less years on end. Especially for an extremely minor and non-violent crime. I hope they bring her home, however I'm not sure what the appropriate response or trade should be.

There's a ton of money to be made is prisons, which is why the private prison industry is booming. They do all kinds of shady shit to increase their profit margins, such as nearly 70% of them negotiating lock-up quotas with state/local governments.

That's quite an allegation.

I don't doubt that inmates can be made to work which yields a profit. I just don't think they make nearly enough to make up for what they take away from taxpayers.
