Forgot this in my first post: DeSantis would do well to serve out his next governor term and skipping any 2024 bid for US President.
He's riding high, and momentum is everything. Could he wait? Sure, but there's no guarantee that the climate or atmosphere in 2028 will be favorable for him. If Trump does run, and does win, the country may be so tired of Republicans that DeSantis doesn't even get a shot. Is he going to wait till 2032 / 2036? His star might fade. He has to make a move while he has the chance. He can do it, he wants to do it. DeSantis 2024.
DeSantis must clearly run in 2024. He'll never again be in such a strong position and have as much momentum as he does now. He would be termed out in 2026 and be out of office for 2 years by 2028. He would be old news by then. There would be the risk of his name fading from the front pages. There would be the risk that something out of his control goes wrong during his remaining years as governor. There would be the risk that some other rising star emerges and steals his thunder. The Democrats could have found a new generational talent like Obama that will be hard to beat, while they will presumably run with geriatric Biden in 2024. And last but not least, by 2028, nobody will care anymore about the strongest policy/leadership selling point DeSantis has going in his favor, namely that he was right on covid and stood up against the tyranny.
With Trump looking weaker and weaker by the day, it is imho blatantly obvious that DeSantis MUST run in 2024 if he wants to be president (and he clearly does, let's not kid ourselves). If he waits, he'll be the GOP's Cory Booker (looked fresh and exciting at some point in the distant past, but has missed his window of opportunity).
