I expected that too, was really weird when Russian demands were called a non-starter and that was the end of the negotiations.
I mean NATO withdrawing from Eastern EU would be out of the question but the West could have given guarantees that Ukraine / Georgia wouldn't receive NATO / EU membership in exchange for Russian guarantees that they wouldn't invade.
It's a give and take situation, can't have it all.
How about Russia not making extra big demands instead?
If Washington says its fine to negotiate on NATO withdrawal from some of its members, it would be a huge loss of prestige for NATO.
How do you imagine a defensive alliance such as NATO, if it lets some other country threaten you and negotiate that you need to leave some members behind?
How about Russia give some lands instead? Maybe the ones they took from Finland? Would mr Putin negotiate about it? Of course not.
Russian guarantees are worth nothing. They have Russian guarantees from Budapest deal, yet it didnt stop Putin making demands about Ukraine.
So Ukraine making any deals with Russia would be buying peace for some months only, like west did with Hitler.
Do you know why Ukraine defends for 4 months, even though Russia is much bigger country? Because UA are friends with NATO as a NATO candidate. NATO members keep selling weapons and ammo to Ukraine, they also sell training and provide financial loans.
If Ukraine would surrender contact with NATO, they would be much easier target for Putin, and that was his plan. Giving up on Ukraine was never an option for Putin.
