I watched the Ramsay documentary when it came out. I was vaguely aware prior to it coming out. There are tons of other things like it, but just this one time, I'm going to take the other side and ask: "How do you control for this in international waters?"
I'm more concerned with the lack of forest maintenance and upkeep on the west coast of the US, tbh. Far more animals die, far more is destroyed, and far more lives are lost over that, and nearly all of it is preventable. And as maintenance further degrades, the fires only get worse. That's not a result of global warming. It's a result of cash crops that were planted by humans with the intent of being used by humans that're highly flammable and not intended for long term growth being allowed to just "do as they will" as though it's standard wildlife.
Plenty of problems in this world. I just don't know that the shark fin soup problem is something that we can tackle directly without the willing assistance of nations that'd rather just turn a blind eye.
Disown the people who consume sharkfin soup you can unfriend them for starters. They are doing it because they think its cool and some kind of power status. There is so many things you can do to change perception but it takes time. I remember cigarettes were smoked everywhere but now there is hardly any I know who smokes. Awareness was raised.
A simple this is not cool message can go a long way but I am sure there are other ways like some kind of national ban on sharkfin soup etc, maybe creating some kind of transnational waters agreement and sending out patrol ships. Modern setallite and gps technology has come a long way we can do it.
International waters are a source of food for everyone. I personally don't want to overpay for seafood just because asians decided they can just overfish with impunity.
