How does the US look if we say, "Britney Griner probably brought the marijuana vape cartridge herself, and we can't be involved in internal Russian matters". Sure, that might make you happy(@bogie), but it's not a policy fitting for the world stage.
Let's not mix "own the enemies in your head" with "own the Russians".
If we're going to be pragmatic about it, then what do we stand to gain by being loudly hostile and outraged but also completely impotent, over an incident where we're pretty clearly in the wrong for all the world to see? Its not like we're showing a willingness to be bullies and assert our dominion over the world, crying "civis romanus sum" to say nobody can punish us. Instead we're showing the world that we will be dishonest and manipulate our international policy even when its transparent, but we won't back it up with action. Like most of Biden's approach to foreign policy, its the worst of both worlds. Either we could be respectful of other country's jurisdiction or we could trample all over it. Instead we're provoking them without any follow through. Which has been the theme of the NATO-Russian scuffle. All that's left to round it out is if we bomb Britney Griner to death in a failed rescue attempt
