Are we to believe that the Biden admin looked at all possible candidates, male or female, black, white, hispanic, asian or native with an open mind, then concluded that the top candidates from all demographic subgroups are equally qualified and that they could thus afford to pick a black woman for symbolic or reparative reasons? No, of course not. Biden repeatedly promised on the campaign trail that he would nominate a black woman. It's blatantly obvious that only black female candidates were even considered for this nomination. His priorities were undeniably "right skin color and gender first, best qualified person for the job second". Brown Jackson is undisputably an affirmative action nominee.

It's no biggie in this specific case since Brown Jackson is indeed extremely qualified and doesn't seem to have skeletons in her closet, so this AA pick has worked out fine. The principle behind this nomination, namely prioritizing the right demographic profile over finding the best qualification, is nonetheless questionable.

One plus she might have is that she comes from the defense side while most other judges were prosecutors. This could give her a different perspective on cases relating to criminal justice reform. (But then again, this was not the primary reason why Biden picked her!)

they were lucky that a suitable black woman was available, stupid promises like that usually backfire

So suitable........yet has a track record of being soft on pedo crime.

In United States v. Cooper, in which the criminal had more than 600 images and videos and posted many on a public blog, the Guidelines called for a sentence of 151-188 months.
Judge Jackson settled on 60 months, the lowest possible sentence allowed by law.

Shocked, I say.

Biden picked her for the Supreme Court. Everything else is irrelevant.

Yes because people w/ wernicke's aphasia don't have their cabinet pick for them.

Look, I get that you've never been the store manager at your Subway, much less filled a genuine executive position, but people in those positions rely on their staff to do the legwork, not do it all themselves.

So you believe that Biden's time as Vice President didn't influence his decision? And the Obama Administration had zero affect on the outcome of his choice as now president?

I haven't had time to watch so far but I haven't heard anything bad yet. Of all the things Biden has fucked up, this doesn't seem like it will be one. I've said that Amy Coney Barrett hasn't really given me much to work with on how she's turn out, I was very unimpressed with Kagan/Sotomayor being party line non-entities whereas Kavanaugh/Gorsuch distinguished themselves, and I doubt I'll have much opinion on Jackson until a few years from now and we've actually seen her at work. Which we will, because there's no reason to think this will get Bork'd. If anything I'd say what little I've seen is more promising than Kagan/Sotomayor, she's actually taken some principled stands for civil liberties and dispassionate sentencing. Merrick Garland was reported to be the most milquetoast nominee ever and he's LARPing as Lavrentiy Beria right now so I don't know how much we can really predict.

If anything I'll appreciate and enjoy the contrast between Thomas's fervent anti-affirmative action stance and personal history against Jackson's overt benefit from it. Having them on the court at the same time will be neat, though we might wonder 'for how long'

also the best argument against hypocritical Republican blathering over AA is their gushing over Barrett being picked by Trump under a promise to pick a female nominee, and the same folks who praised her turning around and crying foul when Biden promises to pick a black female nominee. You can't have it both ways.

The thing is though, even if Biden DIDN'T promise it, most Republicans would say she's an affirmative action pick anyway. Also, the most qualified judge is NEVER chosen because age is THE most important when choosing a nominee. The most qualified person, based on experience and ideology, would likely be "too old."

There's a common thread running through this and I can't quite put my finger on this.

that is correct, however thats not a guarantee to have a black woman with a proper curriculum available at the time a spot at the supreme court opens up
