Why is student debt relief correct? Why should I have to pay your student debt?

Because having an educated and skilled citizenry is better for that society, and decreasing the cost increases access to that.

Economically, increasing access to education makes for a more productive workforce, and not saddling productive workers with debt increases their ability to take risks in starting their own businesses, increases their spending power in the economy, etc. etc.

We are the only world power that fucks thier students into massive debt. Our system is terrible and we should fix it, and part of that is going to be reducing debt burden on students.,

Why should you have to pay taxes at all. Your money is already going to pay for shit for people. If this is really your mindset, stop paying taxes and go build a hut in the woods.

I'm fine with taxes going to the things they are supposed to go to. Roads, Police, Firemen, Hospitals, etc.

I didnt go to college because I couldn't afford college. Now I have to pay off student loan debt for other people who couldn't afford it but went anyways? How is that fair?

My politics are like 90% what's best for others. I'm an educated, intelligent, white male. If I was only looking out for my own self interest I'd vote Republican every time.

I guess this is how.

You get massive benefits from an educated society, both economically and otherwise.

It's not "you paying for somebody else's education", it's "everybody paying for everybody's education". It's selfish and short sighted and honestly pretty dishonest to couch it as you paying the student loan debt of other people. The only reason we're in this situation is because we don't have adequate policy around post-secondary education.

Problem is too much of college is subsidized by the government in massive loans that don’t pass the smell test. Giving teenagers 60k who shouldn’t ever be near that money. It’s a system to create permadebt. Higher education is a joke at this point. Most professors are adjunct because no one wants to pay for quality education. It’s all enrollment numbers and pushing crap classes that benefit no one for a news blurb or a woke social media post.

Plenty of people went to school, paid for it by working during or landing a decent job fresh after graduation. There’s also people who have no chance of paying that debt back and should NEVER have been approved for in the first place. It’s gonna get worse before it gets better but you gotta admit, school is dirty at the moment. If I had the perfect answer I’d make more money. The current model is not sustainable.

Precisely. Student debt relief does not fix the underlying problem. Passing worthless curriculum as qualified 'education' benefits no one. Most people are not fit for higher education regardless.

Ok, sure. I'll concede that maybe there is benefit to help pay for Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Architects etc. But Karen's liberal arts degree isn't helping society in anyway. She can fund that shit herself.

Subsidizing all college goers assumes that they are all pursuing meaningful degrees, which is simply not the case.

Most lawyers get liberal arts degrees first. And lots of people who are very productive got liberal arts degrees first. Lots of managers got a B.A. in English and then went to be managers or just productive workers in general.

Not all education needs to be tailored to a specific productive goal to be good for productivity.

Sounds like we probably agree on most of it then.

Personally I think the U.K. has the best model. Students can't be charged more than $2500 a year for tuition and it's guaranteed to everybody who graduates and can get into a university. Still costs some, but not a barrier to entry and not something that can destroy lives afterwards.
