i'd say by american standards he's definitely left of center, yes.

the thing is, above all he's a contrarian, and when it became popular to shit on the absolutely unhinged right, he switched his focus to arguing with lefties, flexing his (admittedly well above average) intellect on them and trying to win debates, rather than pointing out which "side" is truly terrible on most issues (which obviously gets old when it's so clear and has been for a while).

i noticed that the "reasonable centrist" shtick is very popular amongst people who are smart, but not quite as smart as they think they are. all that said, when you break it down, most of his positions (that i know of) are left-ish (again, by american standards).
