That's why I prefaced my statement with the qualifier "unnecessary".
It goes back to what I was saying before: not all types of infections will increase pressure on hospitals, hence, not all kinds of spread need to be prevented at any cost. Yes, school children do get infected, but studies from all over the world have shown that infections among the school children do not drive infection waves in older age cohorts, nor do they contribute meaningfully to the pressure on the healthcare system.
To name one example, California kept schools almost entirely closed throughout last winter while Florida kept them mostly open, yet Cali had more covid cases and covid deaths per capita throughout that winter than Florida. Cali needlessly closed its schools down during that time, depriving its children of education and much needed social interaction as well as exacerbating socioeconomic inequality. This should be a big scandal, but of course the media is dead silent on the issue.
