That's what I think as well.
Although I shudder at the thought of full on conflict with a nuclear power, we know how appeasement works - and if Taiwan falls, so will Japan - and inevitably Australia, either by physical force or China's sphere of influence. When that happens, we can kiss any hope of ever confronting China goodbye.
I don't think we should threaten them with nukes in return, but employ what I'm going to call the "randy's beer gut strategy" We will deploy a large military force in defense of Japan, the Philippines and AUS - with the full might of the American army if necessary. Its big, its annoying - its passive aggressively in China's face inviting them to do something about it, just like Randy's beer gut.

Unrealistic because the fallout would damage everyone and politicians don’t like rocking the boat. Plus embargoes only work on small banana republics. We don’t have the leverage to dictate this type of shit globally. 40-50 years ago maybe, not today tho.
Something like this would tank financial markets and probably lead to hundreds of billions of corporate losses honestly overall losses would be into trillions.
Politicians are also people with 401k and trust funds and seeing their investment tank 40% when they have 3 homes, kids at Columbia, etc is not something they want.
we cant force allies to also block trade, but just us would be enough to send the signal. its not realistic, but its what's best.
