Gavin himself avoids talking about it much because he risks exposing himself as someone who took advantage of a false narrative (his apparent unsafety) to get free PR out of making people clash for his success.

The Proud Boys aren't Nazis, because unlike Nazis when times get tough their leader won't an-hero he runs from them to avoid the legal ramifications of the movement he started getting well out of hand.

PB had plenty innocent enough roots, but the spiral was quick and Gavin was not without fault. He ran with the narrative that he was in danger on college campuses where he knew his speeches would not be received well, but would get him massive free PR. Milo, Gavin, Ben and many others made BANK by basically speaking in a leftist stronghold then called the overwhelming disagreement they knew was coming censorship to boost podcasts and sell books. They then furthered the narrative by claiming they needed protection, without an actual precedent for that, just threats. Ironically many would likely on a philosophical level call threats themselves thoughtcrime and protected 1A speech.

Mere disagreement was not what was being called censorship.
Speaking spots were sometimes cancelled or exorbitant security fees were charged.
Mobs of leftists were trying to disrupt, cancel and shutdown events.
They falsely equated speech they didnt like with violence and wanted to deplatform different views.

There were a number of violent 'protests' and attacks at conservative speaking events, not 'just' threats. - This invalidates a few of your points.

None of them are claiming threats of violence are protected first amendment speech, not 'many' of them.
