Because we prefer freedom and choice.
Hope this helps.
Do we? The Controlled Substances Act would tend to disagree.
Our laws actively prevent the freedom to treat your own health, and the choice of what to use to do so.
Why does the CVS brand Albuterol Inhaler require a prescription in the US, and why does it cost $50, yet you can get the exact same CVS brand inhaler in Mexico without prescription for $5-$7?
As it turns out, our healthcare system as a whole is far more controlled and has much greater legal protectionism applied than nearly any nation on earth. Far from being a "free" or even "fair" market, it's currently used as a captive market, where the simplest medications for lifelong ailments require hundreds in doctors fees and prescription costs every month, yet would cost less than a Pizza per month elsewhere.
Our problems have absolutely nothing to do with private vs public healthcare, and everything to do with the extreme control we've allowed to be inflicted upon our personal health.
