As a man who will need to survive in a world of automated cars trying to run me down i say modern problems require modern solutions

What would be the difference if it was a person driving instead of Ai.

Also Ai could stop the car fast especially an electric one. If that fails at least it can attempt to dodge a person instead of hitting head on.

Why would it choose? this is extremely unlikely scenario in the first place? Which makes me wonder why would anyone engage in astronomically unlikely what ifs in the first place other then sheer boredom of their lives

IF you're gonna have self driving cars... you need to eliminate the crosswalk issue.
Like... fewer crosswalks, and place them over or under the road.

Or find other ways to deal with the brake failure issue, like disabling the car or having a secondary brake system.

/e Also... due to the fact that we have serious overpopulation... it may be time to eliminate the old "women and children first".

In reality the situation is too statistically rare to ever be relevant. A random choice might honestly give the best result given the entropy of the situation.

^^ asked a very simple question in a hypothetical situation.

In the event of total system failure and the vehicle can clearly distinguish an elderly person from a child still, roll over the elderly person. While that is a deviation from the rules of the road it's a calculated move to preserve more human life technically, unless the kid had terminal cancer or something and the car could tell that too.

If total failure then how can it choose? I would pick a more likely scenario.

I take the third option and break. In life, there's always more than the options offered. It's up to you to live a straight line as a life or go outside boundaries and take the best decision to your knowledge on things that happen on a daily. Problem in life people don't question thing.

Seems like an engineering oversight. There was an eggshell patent done, so either victim should just get stuck to the hood when the outer layer cracks on impact. Most damage is done when the victim hits something else, or is run over after a hit.

Hit the kid who shouldn't be there, just like the kid who shouldn't have been in Harambe's house
