When trump first said he was sending the comfort and mercy, the comfort had no staff and the mercy was undergoing repairs, when they finally did arrive, those hospital ships went mostly unused on both coasts due to military protocol on how they were accepting patients, they refused to budge on them at first. At first they wanted the ships to take non COVID related patients to clear up space for the other hospitals, but that wasn't being utilized, then they wanted to take in COVID patients but didn't have the infrastructure set up at the time to take those patients. The temporary hospitals went up after they mostly had a handle on the ICU issues, so they also went mostly unused as well.

What amused me about the ships going unused, they tried to argue that it was showing that they were handling things, but it was bureaucracy and protocol that was preventing their use, not a lack of patients.

I'll address the New York part because I know it much better.
1. Cuomo did not actually make it a requirement. It was a policy that was interpreted that way.
2. A big percentage of the nursing room illnesses had started even before the policy was being applied.
3. Most patients that had recovered from covid in the hospital were not going to be infectious.
4. Most of the patients dying in the hospital were not coming from hospitals and there were about 6-7000 nursing home deaths reported in NY. Which means that even if you were completely basing all nursing home deaths on this policy (which is highly unlikely), it would not be 10s of 1000s of deaths.
5. There was still a significant shortage of hospital beds in New York City even with the portable hospitals being made.

There were literally two portable hospitals and a floating hospital in New York. This is the epitome of fake news and the reason why Trump won in 2016.

State differences do make the Covid-19 response very complex, I don't disagree with that. I think it's fair to say though too that Trump's leadership was lacking in his response, particularly in his relations with scientific professionals.

When it is time to discharge it is time to go. At that point it is exponentially cheaper to send someone to a luxury hotel with room service and home health care.

Fuck, we were sending homeless people to hotels because the shelters were too dangerous.

the cdc told people to vote even if they had covid symptoms on election day. just a bizarre way this thing evolved

There were a lot more than 2 "portable" (not portable, they weren't on wheels lol but were field hospitals that were built) and those field hospitals were an incredible help and very useful. But again, they took time to go up and there were a lot more patients than that; a lot of whom needed intensive care. The floating hospital was useless as is already addressed in this thread. Don't ever fucking accuse me of fake news on this topic.

I just did. And Florida did what Ney York couldnt because Cuomo was a bad governor. Simple as that.
