heh,

you guys don't know we've manipulated dogs to live in pain because it makes them look cute?

Brithish bulldogs can't give birth on their own. They die, without intervention. Pugs breathe through "straws" their entire life. And German shepherds have hip injuries, because their back legs "need" to be shorter than the front legs.
But hey, let's remove a chromosome to make them look happy :D

Op is mostly correct, most pets are held in cruel conditions and are being bred for appearance and not their well being. Some ppl manage to give them a good life though, props for that. But in many cases it is cruel.

In the cases of pure breads that have severe health problems, including breathing problems, mental illness, or major deformations, I agree.

Most dogs are muts and fairly healthy though.

If you get one, then do your research imo. Most dogs indeed have a healthy happy life.

/e That doesn't count for all animals though.
Goldfish can live for 40+ years in the wild.. 10 years max in a tank

but are they likely to live 40+ years in the wild?

Hell no lol

Don't treat the max life as though it's a normal life.

My dogs are both mutts, same with my cats, and they all came from shelters, except one who was from a family on craigslist.

My wife has a beta tank and he's been alive and doing good for about a year, and another fish tank that's a bit below capacity on fish that's been doing good. Had very minimal losses the first year.

My new home had a leaking pond, the goldfish almost died there if I didn't buy a tank asap.. I'm hoping they are happy and am really doing my best to keep them healthy.. Problem is that they should grow up to 30-40 cm (15 inch).
right now they've grown from 10 cm to 15 in 6 months. So I've just bought a larger tank right now in order to not physically deform them through growth restrictions (like 90% of goldfishes in tanks) and am thinking of recreating the pond or find a better home after the larger tank within a year..

If I started this on my own, I'd indeed choose smaller fish like beta's like your wife and give them more space than ppl say they'd need..
I mean animals are cute as fuck. Giving them a good life usually requires more than we think was sufficient in recent history. From what I see around me we do need to reconsider minimum requirements. And it seems like we are slowly getting there in recent years.

(/e lost in mud translation) I have at least given them a better life than they had. Can't help to still feel a bit sad for them being confined as they are.

Argument against Beta ownership, in the spirit of being devil's advocate, is that to get such pretty ones breeders "line breed" to select recessive traits, often spawning a lot of shitty mutant inbred fish that hatch to be flushed. Flowerhorn cichlids are in this category as well. Electric Blue Jack Dempsey cichlid. German Blue Rams. Blood Parrots. Catastrophic loss of life to create a $10 sale.

Any 90 -120 gallon tank would be fine for the lifespan of a goldfish.
