the idea of full abolition is really dumb. if that's not what you meant, fine. if it is, you're dumb.

Why waste your time replying to someone you think is dumb?

Thanks and have a nice day!

ICE wasn't formed until 2003. America clearly had an immigration policy prior to 2003.

Irrelevant. This is not about the literal meaning of the words, this is about symbolism. It is unmistakable what the slogan "abolish ICE" is meant to signal in the context of contemporary American politics: support for a far more liberal immigration policy in which enforcement and deportations are greatly reduced (if not ceased entirely), broad amnesty is given and citizenship is handed out like candy.

In this sense, "abolish ICE" is very similar to Trump's "build the wall" slogan, whose primary purpose was to signal support for a far more restrictive immigration policy rather than being hell-bent on an actual physical wall.

I'm not understanding your point here. The quote you're responding to is in the context of replying to "Abolish ICE = abolish immigration policy".

You and proccy were quibbling over what the idea of "abolish ICE" would mean in practice, with proccy arguing that it would mean the end of immigration policy and you disagreeing. My point is that this debate you two were having is irrelevant. Yes, you are right in a strictly technical sense that even without ICE, there would still be immigration policy. But in a practical sense, proccy is right: "abolish ICE" would mean the end of immigration enforcement.

And what I'm saying is that this is exactly what the proponents of "abolish ICE" want. This is not some good-faith proposal brought up by short-sighted, naive activists who dont understand the consequences their proposal would have in practice - no, these consequences (functionally open borders) are their explicit goal.

And that is exactly my point, jesus christ: you're nitpicking words while you're totally missing or neglecting the bigger picture.

Of course abolishing ICE would lead to a huge drop in immigration enforcement, of course abolishing ICE would drastically reduce the impact and scope of future policy decisions on immigration, of course the slogan is meant to signal support for a very liberal, 'open' immigration policy, of course getting functionally open borders is the true and explicit goal of the proponents of the "abolish ICE" movement.

It's ridiculous how you're trying to deny, or at least ignore, all of this by fixating on the fact that proccy said "policy" where he should have said "enforcement".

Nah. I'm just apathetic, and altogether now bored, with snowflakes getting triggered more by the thread title than they are actually engaging with the information in the OP.
