I for one am quite comfortable putting significant blame on Bubba.
He went on a media tour pretending to be a hero/victim and insulting skeptics as "simple-minded" backwards racists.

Well, I think it's fair to distinguish between labeling anyone who was skeptical and waiting for evidence/investigation conclusion as simple-minded v. saying that the people who believed it was an orchestrated hoax are simple-minded.

The one interview I've seen where Bubba refers to someone(s) as simple-minded was after he was asked about his thoughts on "the people who doubt this even happened". The two positions I've described above got muddied by the fervor of the media, unfortunately, as both reasonable questioning and active rumors of a hoax were being spread at the same time. This whole situation just became a runaway train.

“normal” people like you and me could go get a beer or two (or three) and discuss topics without it devolving into chaos, but unfortunately we are becoming the exception not the rule anymore
