Well, they were using integrity as a way to pay for their air space. Ot was expected that they would host non profit generating news programs as a way to make up for their exclusive access to that part of the spectrum. Once we stopped enforcing that, and more methods of access came into use, they didnt have to lose money on news anymore
Access to news is one half of the access sphere. the other is access to information by the media. it's a lot easier to report "lets wait for the facts" when you have no choice. but when we instead have a heap of conflicting facts they can report what gets the most clicks.
and look at the # of celebrities, it's grown 100 fold in the last 20 years. a public who previously only cared about what happens to backstreet boys and britney spears now cares about what happens to just about anyone with 500k instagram followers or more. so where before they couldn't fill a full day they now have pick of the litter on "guess what ____ said about ____" type stories.
