I think his fighting spirit is just fine and he's certainly not senile. If you watch some of his longer interviews, you would see that it's not the case. I certainly trust his judgment and instincts FAR more than Trump's. Also, I think you're really out of touch with a large section of Democratic voters. Do you honestly think that your comment would have been effective? I certainly don't because the voters have no interesting in hearing something like that.
As for Warren being a better campaigner, I tend to agree. She's done an incredible job and is the only true threat to Biden. I'm not convinced she can win in the general but we'll have to see.
Of course I am out of touch with those who support
THIS Democratic party. They are stupid and/or insane. The contemporary Democratic party is a danger to our wealth, our security and our way of life. And just for the record: I was preferring the Democrats until well into the 2010s, was rooting for Gore, Kerry and Obama (x2).
About the "would such a retort have been effective": of course not with the live crowd during the debates. These crowds represent the ultra-progressive activist left. They are the fringe, the leftist equivalent of the "build the wall/lock her up"-crowd on the Republican side. These are the crowds that cheer for open borders, kicking 180m+ americans off their current healthcare plans and free abortions for transgender women. Pretty much every policy that riles these crowds up would be radioactive in the general election campaign.
These people who are in the live crowds during the debates neither represent the mean primary voter, nor come anywhere close to the political middle of the electorate-at-large. Pandering to them, or treading extra carefully to not step on their feet, is a bad strategy for someone like Biden who's running on moderation, electability and a return to normalcy. Yes, Biden replying with an unapologetic "your proposals are going too far, this is getting insane, sorry not sorry" would get him booed by the live crowds, but it would score him net points with the Democratic base. He wont get the votes of the activist left anyway.
Furthermore, all surveys are crystal clear when it comes to the priorities of Democrats: by far the most important issue for Democratic primary voters is to defeat Trump. Therefore, a hint that the left is risking a 'McGovern 72 redux' should be effective, no matter if the activist left likes to hear it or not.
