In what way do you think I framed this that makes it adversarial? I never gave a situation. I simply said that it is an effective tool to understanding your opponents position, and through that making you understand both your and their arguments more thoroughly. I would like you to point out where I said it had to be adversarial?

No, listening and reading only puts the other side in your perspective. The only way you can really think through the other side is through conversation, debate, or argument. While you are thinking of ways to counter what they are saying you will have to attempt to think of things from their perspective to understand their position so you can calculate how to counter it.
If you think listening and reading isn't a way to learn about the other side, that's a toxic attitude. (You explicitly started this argument on the basis that you can't learn by listening)
If you think you can only think through the other side by debating and arguing, that's adversarial.
If you think discussions have to include thinking of ways to counter what the other person is saying, that's adversarial.
It's pretty clear in the way you describe the technique and the way you conduct yourself on the forum. The only "good" part is where you say you have to attempt to think of things from their perspective, but to be honest I've literally never seen you make that attempt. You do not have a healthy attitude towards learning and it holds you back from understanding more complex ideas than you currently hold.
