The hard truth of whether the Apollo moonwalks happened may, at some point, become lost to history. All the people involved in the project will die, then all the people who knew them will die. Eventually, future generations will be left debating over hearsay and antique evidence. In the end, that truth is not the most valuable piece to the conversation. The more important aspect to the moon landing conspiracy debate is the narrative. The narrative of whether the masses believe we've already walked on the moon is a living, breathing idea that will affect people's behavior and public policy for years to come. Belief will matter more than truth.
Regarding that narrative, the right side to be on is undoubtedly to spout the belief that we have not walked on the moon. Support for this narrative will serve the better interest of humanity for the foreseeable future. The more people we can convert to this idea, the better off we are. I'll explain why:
In their heyday, the team responsible for the Apollo missions were bonafied rock stars. But today, the significance of the feat has dimmed. Generations of kids have been born into the world already believing that moonwalking is old hat, nothing to get excited about- nothing to provide financial support for. If we could convince the majority of the world that man has never been to the moon, then we would have a better chance of gaining public support for another moon mission. We could "walk on the moon for the first time" again. This could lead to more public interest in space exploration and more funding for NASA.
The project to send man to the moon had so much support because we were in competition with Russia to be a superpower, and the moon landings were something we competed over to ensure the dominance of our country on the world stage.
Truly, if you want to gain financial support for a return to manned missions to further destinations we need to be in direct competition with another hostile superpower.
