I remember senior year sitting in my facing history: the holocaust class when someone ran up and down the halls yelling 'we're all going to die" the private phone for each teacher rang simultaneously, it was an eerie sound to hear echoing down the halls. We were doing an assignment about the trail of tears when our teacher turned on the tv set to the local news where we saw the first tower on fire and them moments later the plane colliding with the second one. It was a small class, not many people wanted to take that elective. Teacher started crying, none of us knew why. Later we learned that we had a economics (teacher was the same for both classes) field trip planned for the same day but it fell through weeks prior due to the school not wanting to foot the bill. She was also trying to get a trip to the holocaust museum scheduled as well but my school was banned permanently for an incident back during our middle school holocaust museum trip where another school got confused for ours (they had kids climbing on one of the box cars and throwing shoes at people)
One by one students were being called to the front office to be picked up by their parents. By the end of the day, there were only a handful of students left. I never got the call, my mother was on lockdown at work and my father was probably passed out from working late. Rest of the day was spent watching whatever movie the teacher had on hand because no one could concentrate and there weren't enough students to warrant continuing the current lesson plan. I ended up skipping last period since there were like 3 people in there, with my friend dani and we walked to her house, her dad picked us up on the way to her house and we stopped for KFC, he was quiet the whole time. This was a man that would never shut up and he was quiet. We watched a couple movies at her house and I finally walked home. I walked into my living room and my mother was livid "where the hell were you?!" she screamed, crying, I was confused. My mom was scared because she was on lockdown and when she finally could call home, no would answer because my father was out looking for me. Found out later my aunt came to pick me up, but they refused her ID because it was expired. She was a listed contact but wouldn't accept her ID.
I remember almost getting suspended for cutting last period but the principal overruled the teacher because of what happened and said to not do it again.
It was a defining moment that made me start looking into politics and also brought out the worst in people I was friends or acquaintances with. We had three muslim students in our senior class and the way people treated them after what happened was downright sickening.
Econ field trip, to the WTC?
