I would cut funding to corrections and legalize pot. nice windfall of tax revenue, save on enforcement, sell off or give up unneeded facilities. stop deportation of non-violent illegal immigrants, even those collected incidentally, and instead use a 3 strikes rule. Spending the money instead to enforce the southern mexican border where agent labor and building labor is cheaper. I would tighten R&D writeoffs for corporations, too long has the american tax payer absorbed those costs. I would institute a public shaming practice for corporations that move over seas, fuck tariffs, let's use the american population as a watchdog to shift the scales of when outsourcing is feasible economically. I'd pump up interested rates a few percent spread out to cool inflation, deflate the bubble a bit, and strengthen the bond market. Slight increases to hunting and fishing licences and permits, 20$ for a deer that comes out to 100$ of meat is a bit low. Small increases across the board can net some gains. Outlaw subprime mortgages and add requirements for further explanation on adjustable rate loans to hopefully cut out the need for further bank bailouts. Cut down farm subsidies to stop the propping up of corn syrup, enough is enough and it's no longer saving families it's a write off for corporate farms. Perhaps close that up and set an employee cap on farms seeking subsidies to work only for smaller operations. Direct my ag and education depts to target and encourage small agribusiness and production, market gardening and community initiatives, locally or state handled with minimal federal oversight just a guidance package. State run methane collection initiatives with large corporate farms to reduce energy spending. More stringent rules on infrastructure construction contracting and timetables to reduce costs on those fronts, perhaps one of the worst run things america does with wild overspending. Put education entirely back on the states with only oversight and direction from the dept of ed and no common core or similar mandates. Increase the legacy tax on passing over estates exceeding a certain size, not too much but slight increase. cut back retirement benefits for state employees a bit, we live in an era where in 45 mins u can set up an IRA all over the internet that's quality. The demand just isn't there as much for that, and was always a bit unfair for private sector workers. Decrease inspection agencies for general safety and increase liabilities on corporate entities to match. Impose penalties on law suits deemed frivolous and tossed out of court. Eliminate nearly all municipalities paid to traffic courts with a requirement to show up, pay by mail or show up to contest. Taper back promises to social security payouts for future generations to increase it's solvency, as stated IRAs are decreasing demand for them. Eliminate SS checks for anyone with an income over a certain line from IRAs and other investments, a needs based system may be solvent indefinitely. Tax cuts for corporations that donate defect products to food bank organizations, with increased corporate taxes to match. Drastically reduce the employment of certain departments that are flooded with redundant employees still holding positions that automation can and in many cases has eliminated the need for.
i liked when trump said "waste fraud and abuse" trimming was the answer to fixing the deficit, he just hasn't done much more than trim off the tippity top.
good shit. ill touch on a couple
Pot legalization: i think this will happen in our lifetime (federally), the more people are neutral or pro-legalization and the more big pharma continues to soil their own reputation the faster this will occur. the benefits are multi-fold
R&D write-off tightening/shaming outsourcing: haha if only! this could work though given the power of ‘lol the internet is mad’
State-level education policy vs federal: yes x 1000.
Needs-based social security: sounds good but you and i both know this is a hard sell. i have older relatives who are quite well off but are still drawing their benefits because “i paid into the system so gimme”. and tbh i dont blame them. i dont plan on it being there when i hit that age.
Eliminating redundant fed depts/employees: agreed, but that will cause a short-term recession. might be worth
Banning subprime mortgages: that’s racist
personally i’d love to cut growth to defense spending too - maybe move our troops out of places where they are hated and use them along the border
