This just in: a daughter isn't a member of your immediate family.
But her daughter isn't the development, the grandchild is. An immediate family issue that impacts candidate recruitment is of the "my son is gay, will the new exposure that my family will receive as a response to me being on the presidential ticket negatively impact his life" variety. It's linear, and the farther removed from the candidate the less of an impact in the aggregate it has on the decision to run for office. Everything starts with the spouse and moves outward, moving on to children (almost always adolescents) and finally to grandchildren or grandparents. This development falls in the later category, which is of least concern, because Clinton's daughter is an adult woman who doesn't need Clinton herself to be actively involved during the pregnancy.
This is much different than if a 48 year old county commissioner's 20-year old daughter was pregnant and now the potential candidate has to decide if this is the right time to give up every semblance of a normal life in order to take on 20-hour days where they never see their family and can provide no financial or personal help to them. It's just simply not a development that changes the calculation.
