It does.
As society has developed it has placed pressure on individuals and their sexuality to behave in the way that it is defined.
There are still homosexual men and women that are in heterosexual relationships and are having children. The reason they are still in this relationship is from the fear of societies reaction to their coming out.
On the flip side of that... Society also pins gay men and women to remain gay. Once you come out, you're out. If you decide you want to have sex with a member of the opposite sex, you run the risk of alienating yourself by stepping all over your prior stance.
While I don't think either of my ideas are absolute, I do feel that there is a bit of both happening at the same time.
