All the quotes we ever needed came from Parmenides, Pythagoras, Protagora, Aristotle, Thales, Socrates, Plato, and to a lesser extent Aeschyllus, Homer and the like.

One of my faves:

Quote (Sioux @ Fri @ 22 May 2009 @ 11:24)
You cannot disprove God with science. Thats like disproving cupcakes are delicious with math.

"Patriotism is the belief that proximity of certain dirt to your mother's womb makes you better, than somebody else."

- Stephan Molyneaux, Freedomain Radio

"They are out there, I think to myself, those ordinary citizens who have grown up in the midst of all the political and cultural battles, but who have found a way- in their own lives, at least -to make peace with their neighbors, and themselves. I imagine the white Southern who growing up heard his dad talk about niggers this and niggers that but who has struck up a friendship with black guys at the office and is trying to teach his own son different, who thinks discrimination is wrong but doesn't see why the son of a black doctor should get admitted into law school ahead of his own son. Or the former Black Panther who who decided to go into real estate, bought a few buildings in the neighborhood, and is just as tired of drug dealers in front of those buildings as he is of the bankers who won't give him a loan to expand his business. There's the middle-aged feminist who still morns her abortion, and the Christian woman who paid for her teenager's abortion, and the millions of waitresses and temp secretaries and nurse's assistants and Wal-Mart associates who hold their breathe every single month in the hope that they'll have enough money to support the children that they did bring into the world.

I imagine they are waiting for a politics with the maturity to balance idealism and realism, to distinguish between what can and cannot be compromised, to admit the possibility that the other side might sometimes have a point. They don't always understand the arguments between right and left, conservative and liberal, but they recognize the difference between dogma and common sense, responsibility and irresponsibility, between those things that last and those that are fleeting.

They are out there, waiting for Republicans and Democrats to catch up with them."

- p51-52 Barack Obama's "The Audacity of Hope"

"Many difficulties that nature throws our way, may be smoothed over by the exercise of intelligence."

- ?

"There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt."

- John Adams, 1735-1826

Every aspect of Western culture needs a new code of ethics - a rational ethics - as a precondition of rebirth.

-Ayn Rand

Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.

-Ayn Rand

“Fate is for those too weak to determine their own destiny.” - Kamran Hamid

"The more i read, the more i see the little i know."
"It strikes me as highly amusing how a rubensian nude is considered art while a penthouse nude is considered porn. They both depict the same nudity of a different woman"
Both by me.

A human being can only be defined as an animal which continues to drink when it is not thirsty.

"The most thought-provoking thing in our thought-provoking time is that we are still not thinking."
Martin Heidegger

"In the world of knowledge, the idea of the Good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort; and when seen, is also inferred to be the universal author of all things beautiful and right, parent of light and the lord of the light of this visible world, and the source of truth and reason in the intellectual."
Plato

"The One as transcending Intellect, transcends knowing... Knowing is a unitary thing, but defined; the first is One, but undefined."
Plotinus

"Death is nothing to us; for the body, when it has been resolved into the elements, has no feeling and that which has no feeling is nothing to us."
Epicurus

"It is both necessary to say and think that being is: for to be is possible, and nothingness is not possible."
Parmenides

"Being is."`
Parmenides

The last quote is one of the most difficult things to think about, ever, in my opinion.

E/ "Helplessness guides the wandering thought in their breasts; they are carried along deaf and blind alike, dazed, beasts without judgment, convinced that to be and not to be are the same and not the same, and that the road of all things is a backward-turning one." Some more Parmenides to twist our minds.
