France is headed towards Sha'ria law and that's not even "church and state", it's Islamic law in opposition to Christian law which is ubiquitous among the West (while the Anglosphere has common law, which is the present pinnacle of Christian jurisprudence)

America was founded as a Reformed Protestant spin-off of the Anglican-dominated British Imperial State, the foundations of which were built by the radically protestant Puritans. Freedom of religion is a doctrine of Reformed Protestantism which is reflected in the US constitution. What people fail to understand today is that freedom of religion was in reference to freedom of faith under the wide Protestant umbrella, a repudiation of both the dogmatic Catholic and Anglican churches (Anglicanism can be interpreted as a hybrid between Catholicism and Protestantism, a tradeoff)
