Free speech is great. But people should understand that there are consequences.
Yeah sure but this is too often used by leftists to basically invalidate the concept of free speech altogether. If one is truly in support of free speech, they must recognize that it is controversial speech or challenging speech that needs the most protection, and in a highly censored society, won't get it. Free speech, if we allow it. This oft trotted out "freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences" is just saying "Speech I like is what I will call free speech, speech I don't like won't be allowed". Often times people will say "free speech just means the government doesn't censor you" but this misses the spirit of the concept entirely
If you ask me I think truly free speech is a nice illusion. Like calling North Korea a peoples' Republic. It's just a label for within the current overton window, which is fine. People should just stop calling it free speech and/or stop claiming to support other peoples' right to speak and just be honest and admit it's about who's in charge and what they want said and not said. TLDR if you live by the pithy utterance of "freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences" then you don't get to say you're in support of free speech, because you're not. You're in support of your own authority, or the authority of society at large you can leverage
