I always find this interesting. Idk why people like to state stuff like this... Smarter people have existed throughout history than you could ever hope to be that were christian, even the earliest scientists.... You can disagree all you want but calling it insanity is just escapism.
There is a good reason for it in history and I am going to give a rather neutral take.
A lot were born into it and the rejection of said faith will encounter Ex Communication and in worst case heresy which might lead to the lose of life.
It is so in the Ottoman controlled Muslim world and it is so in the Catholic controlled Christian world.
It came to a point where Martin Luther King rebelled and started the reformation and started the protestant movement and the historical accounts you might need to read as to why.
Furthermore, when humans grow older and if they are influenced by Christianity in EU and Islam at a point some in parts of EU and the Near East.
Faith and Religion gives succor and comfort when science and logic cannot provide. Many times it provided relief and release especially during the end of one's life.
However, to make the statement that they became Christians / Muslims by their own personal accord because they fervently believe in the word or they have to be a Christian or Muslim because of society , peer pressure and " traditions " is a matter than needs to be look further into.
Many people in the East became Christians not because they really believe in the word. It is more for getting out of poverty and networking which is quite evident in more advanced countries and cities to get richer personally.
So, in a way in is kind of insane how human beings will misuse the Lord for their own personal reasons.
