Those jobs are temporary for most people, as they should be. I worked as a cook for like 3-4 years in various restaurants. Making like 11-13 bucks an hour at the time. I remember servers complaining about making 50 bucks on a Tuesday night and resenting them as they literally made my weekly pay check in 2 4 hour shifts on a Friday and Saturday night.

You should have received partial tip-out as a cook. This was the standard practice at all of the restaurants I have worked at. You played a part in the customers' experience being memorable by cooking the food well. You deserved a portion of the tips. Heck, I was the dishwasher and I always got tips, just not as much as the waitresses.

Nowadays I only tip as a form of insurance for not having my food spat in the next time I come in. Everywhere else, such as when at a coffee shop where I can see how my drink is made, no. I suppose if I received truly fantastic service I would tip but honestly I find that there really isn't much difference. Here servers get their own minimum wage, which is slightly less than the regular minimum wage at $ 16.75 CAD, so it's not like they can't live without tips.

Also, being asked to tip when buying something that doesn't require service, such as a book, is bullshit, I agree.

I refuse to add tips to orders if it is prompted. It honestly bothers me when you see different % tips on a screen when you swipe a card at fucking McAllister or somewhere like that.

That being said if I am being served and a server gave me good service I will tip them accordingly, with cash handed directly to them. My wife and I were in Dallas a few weeks ago and stopped for lunch at a bar and grill in Arlington. The waitress was actually knowledgeable and helpful. She has most of her boobs showing but didn’t let her ridiculous fingernails get in the way of our food. She served me two beers and then never asked if I wanted a third glass. She got $50 for doing everything correctly.

The cashiers that punch the orders into a touchscreen then pull their phones back out get nothing.

$50 USD is a lot of money for a tip. She must have had huge boobs :P

I had a buddy who would make a walking motion with his index finger and middle finger.

He'd say to the waitress, that's your tip walking away.

he gave no fucks lol

I was mostly impressed by her not giving me the option to get drunk at three in the afternoon. Good service deserves to be rewarded. Especially when somebody who makes a good living asks somebody else to prepare their meal.

The food was really good too.

No lol back of the house didn’t get shit because we got a hourly wage above min wage but I would say cooking is a fairly stressful job in a high volume place. Servers sometimes have their own ‘hardships’ though dealing with difficult customers.

Pretty incredible I make way more money today vs back then, working in a comfortable office with AC with ability to make my own hours/work remote, it’s night and day contrast and I would say the stress level is way less.

Low end/low skilled jobs suck, glad I’m past that stage in my work life.

I just came back from a trip to the US and was surprised by how quickly stuff is being served and how helpful people are in general compared to what we have here in Europe.

In an NYC Diner we got served coffee within 60 seconds of getting a seat and got served our breakfast for three within ~4-5 minutes tops. Hotel staff was helpful and restaurant waiters were attentive and helpful with our off the menu requests (we have a kid travelling with us).

I just had a lunch here at home and it took waiters 10 minutes to notice us and 40 minutes to bring a burger. JFC, place was half empty with terrace not even working due to weather.

Having said that I was surprised by the rampant extortion of tips for EVERYTHING in the US and what really triggered me demanding tips BEFORE service. Don't get me wrong I don't mind tipping if that's the local culture, but why ask for tip upfront for stuff that is not a service rendered (eg websites?) or for something that does not involve any deviation of behavior (i'm looking at you Shake Shack. Demanding tip for pouring a lemonade?) or eg buying a book in a museum - why should I tip you 20% of the value of the book?

What's your take on this jsp. Where is this all going.

I would go , Japan. Service is top notch and they refuse tips. They will think you are insulting them.

it sucks big time

i used to do security at a stadium after my regular shit job at university and dealing with drunks and other annoying people for pennies above minimum wage was not exactly fun

i am glad i did it though, the experience keeps you grounded

People get too fking comfortable. If your business relies on your workers to survive from other people donating money ontop of the service and products that they have already bought it means your business is dogshit.
This guilt tripping has to stop. The worker is left between a rock and a hard place, because not only are they getting paid shit for the amount of work they do and then have to deal with horrible customers all day then they better quit.

However some blame has to be carried by the workers because they choose to sign up for the responsibilities and the pay. If they feel entitled for extra they should renegotiate with the manager for pay increase or gtfo of that job.

If the waiters and hotel lobby boys make you feel like shit because you tipped 15% instead of 25% for the expected service then they deserve - 25% to their salary and a dressing down.

Unless there is exceptional service or I happen to have extra unwanted change then I don't tip. As a customer if I feel like the tips are unjustified just don't tip and or take your business elsewhere. It's simple

My wife's cafe went to a service fee 20pcnt on base charge no tip expected. Service fee split among all hourly workers front and back. Most people get along with it, some complain they don't want to tip but it's a service fee lol.

Like in Paris when you want to sit (or outside at bench), service charge or get yelled at by old hag. Or in most of EU use bathroom, service charge.
