I'd say a majority of what I do could be automated, I've already automated a bunch of it myself, but it would be cost prohibitive and they'd still need people to plug/unplug things and look at blinky lights.

I'd guess most folks jobs are on the same boat, a lot of our could be automated but it's too expensive to make that a reality for most orgs.

My job makes thorough use of automation and will continue to do so, but fundamental things like mixing chemicals to put in the machines will always need human hands.

... The attached video is one of MANY options as far as automation goes and clearly shows that robots will soon (5-10 years or less IMO) be able to replace your current position. Humanoid robots (especially by Boston Dynamics) are getting pretty amazing.

This is stupidly inefficient & expensive for any kind of lab work

The robot will need constant preventative maintenance

The robot will be screwing up constantly and need correction

As Netflix said automation enhances our work, not replacing it. Automated instrumentation is the core of genomic sequencing for example, and manual injections have gone the way of the dodo (autosamplers)

One thing that people constantly ignore when talking about automation & robots is cost - these things aren't cheap

Robotics dont really need as much maintenance as people think. but that's besides the point, as the eventual automated process for lab work wont be robotic in nature, at least not this type. it would be a machine more similar to what makes and mixes beverages. but its too specialized to even be made, and would need to have a hell of a self cleaning feature that's very cost preventative.

most people view AI and robots as the same thing, that's a very small part of automation. and robots aren't what's really going to lead job loss. non-robotic automation is responsible for just as much job loss in the last 50 years as outsourcing, likely more.

I'm well aware that robots are pretty effing expensive right now, but that cost will decrease over time...

As far as automation "enhancing" work and not "replacing it," I agree in some cases. However, what happens when huge giants like Amazon begins decreasing its amount of employees due to the amount of assistance from robots? More simple jobs, like warehouses... those are one of the main areas I'm concerned about.

And your brother is right about math & physics. It is mathematicians who create the AI in the first place after all.

AI seems to be very good & will improve at doing more menial-level computer work. It also seems really good for certain aspects of writing, given that the writing isn't unique prose. For example, AI will be very good at writing shitty scripts for churning out TV shows and movies
