It's quite easy to understand: Romney strongly disagreed with Obama on policy and ideology, but had a decent amount of respect for Obama as a person.
Romney agrees with Trump on a lot of policy and ideology (the parts where Trump adheres to Republican orthodoxy), but absolutely despises Trump's populist rhetoric and his personal conduct. He obviously has very little respect for Trump as a person.


And since Mormons adore Romney while Trump underperforms with them, Romney doesnt have to worry about his Utah senate seat one bit even if he bucks Trump on a lot of occasions. Moreover, since Romney's political career almost certainly wont go beyond his current position of a US senator, he doesnt really have anything to lose and can have a field day with Trump.

Simply put, when it comes to their relationship with Trump and the role they fill on the Senate, Romney is McCain 2.0.

do smart people go to better states, or are certain states (in some sense) 'better' because they have the smarter/better people?



also, a lot of the booming sunbelt states are run by republicans, e.g. texas, florida, georgia, arizona. those states experience rapid population growth, so they cant be that shitty overall.
