Most people didn't need to do much math in the past. Even basic algebra was beyond most people. My dad does/did surveying and before a calculator and GPS he used a chart of approximate trig solutions, no theory or calculation involved.

Gonna disagree that more people choose not to read. What are we doing now? Reading is far more ubiquitous now than ot was eighty years ago when you could function in polite society being illiterate. As for appreciating the classics, that isnt good in itself. It was largely a function of limited access than inherent quality

I think you overestimate the education available to the average person at the time Huxley was alive and writing.

He’s not saying people are more ignorant because they don’t have access he’s saying people are choosing to be ignorant of certain things like history, classics, philosophy, religion, etc, because we are overwhelmed with activities that are more satisfying but much shallower.

That’s consistent with first world reality today. Most people don’t give two shits about Shakespeare or Aristotle, they spend most of their time on Instagram relative to the former.

I disagree that people are more ignorant. The general public were far less informed during his time than they are now, and I dont see us as being less interested. We live in a time that is pseudo-intellectual, not anti-intellectual IMO.
