with my tinfoil hat on it seems like they sense a crash to the economy is looming and they'd rather pin it on trump and run headlines for 2 years about how he brutalized a minority woman to cripple him in the midterms and rebound in 2028.

1st optics is meh.. they whiffed on it. But then again, in current climate she really couldn't afford to pick someone like Shapiro. She's been long accused of talking out of both sides of her mouth and it would be difficult to fold the far left under a ticket with a guy that volunteered in the IDF.

I agree, this is more of a long term play, they probably realize this election is going to be very difficult.

I can think of a few threads to this

1. Yes, Walz is obviously the less strategic of the two picks. If Kamala cannot win MN without help she cannot win, period. PA is 10000x more important a prize if you're playing to win. Even if JD Vance isn't making a splash, he was purposefully chosen to appeal to blue collar voters in swing states and especially Ohio
2. VPs generally don't have much of an impact on the ticket. This is true, so even if this is a bad strategy by Kamala, it really doesn't matter much, Trump is right in that regard. They really only nudge the needle by a bit in their home state, and nobody will see either of these two except for a single debate (if that happens at all)
3. While Shapiro is clearly the more strategic pick, he may not have been willing to go down with Kamala's ship. He might have told her 'no'. Walz does not have a career ahead of himself in politics, he is almost as bad on stage as Dayton was, he has nothing to sacrifice since he's already on his last term.

You could say Kamala is playing to lose, but by all conventional logic she shouldn't have a chance in this race in the first place, the tendency against an incumbent blamed for a bad economy and geopolitical disaster is so severe Biden jumped off a ledge before the race was even in swing.
Tim Walz will open up Kamala to every single obvious attack line by Trump. He will cast them as the ticket of Commiefornia and Murderopolis. He'll talk about how Tim Walz let his state burn and Kamala cheered it on.

the whole idea that Kamala is afraid of the fringe anti-semitic militant muslim wing of the party is why she passed on Shapiro doesn't hold water. The DNC just walked all over the voters and installed Kamala as a candidate with no primaries and got the entire media and party apparatus behind her in lockstep, those are not the actions of someone being led around by a grassroots movement lmao.

there is of course an underbelly of "well we still need to get out the vote", showing they pretend to have learned, but we all know they havent learned the most crucial lesson in all of politics, losing with grace.
