By compelled I was told in no uncertain terms ( by the union rep) that if i did not join then he would have a job strike called and the bricklayers would not cross the picket line thus putting my boss out of business until the issue was settled with me joining or getting fired. Seemed rather compulsory to me at the time.

Nope, nobody forced you to work that job. You could have worked something else because thats how freedom works. They have a right to association and if they dont want to associate with non union workers thats their right.
